About Powell, Therapist and Writer
Powell Burke, LCSW
Psychotherapist
Powell’s Professional Affiliations Include:
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing psychotherapy to clients across multiple states.
My clinical training includes graduate study in both social work and creative writing, reflecting a long-standing interest in human experience and how we make meaning of it.
My professional background includes roles in private practice, group practice, and work in crisis intervention at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
I have also worked in medical care coordination, and completed clinical training in residential treatment settings within hospital systems. In addition to my formal education, I have pursued advanced training across a range of therapeutic approaches and maintain active involvement in several professional organizations.
My Values as a Therapist
-

Acceptance
I always strive to provide unconditional positive regard for clients, and in a safe and nonjudgmental space. I not only accept, but celebrate, all aspects of a client’s self and identity. This aligns with my use of ACT therapy, which emphasizes willingness to experience thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations as they exist in the present moment without avoidance or control.
-

Individuality
Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and my work is tailored based on your individual needs, preferences, personality, goals, and history. I honor all my clients’ individuality and diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and belief system.
-

Strengths-Based
I take a non-pathologizing approach to mental health care, leveraging a client’s unique strengths to help them reach their goals and potentials. Diagnoses are not identities—they are labels for collections of symptoms which need attention, pointing to possible roadmaps for treatment and healing.
Therapist and Fiction Writer
Alongside my clinical work, I have an ongoing practice as a fiction writer, with published work in literary journals and participation in national and international writing residencies.
This creative background informs my appreciation for the complexity of people’s inner lives and the many ways individuals try to understand and express their experiences. Across both writing and psychotherapy, I have been drawn to questions of identity, meaning, and how people navigate change. These threads come together in my work with clients, where I bring a broad, integrative perspective shaped by diverse experiences across disciplines and environments.
My Story, Continued
My early academic path was shaped by a strong liberal arts foundation. I studied in Florence, focusing on Italian language and Renaissance art history, and later conducted ethnographic research in London, examining community responses to the 2005 Underground bombing.
I’ve always been deeply involved in writing and community-building. I served as editor of my college newspaper after holding roles as a reporter and copy editor. I also helped launch a peer support program for students, and contributed to developing a school-based intervention program for middle-school girls. My undergraduate thesis in sociology explored the history and culture of creative writing communities.
